In this paper I will be contrasting the differences between one newspaper article and one journal article on the studies of helping memory loss in Alzheimer’s patients. Alzheimer’s disease is a condition that affects many Americans today. Over twenty six million people suffer from this disease and some five million of them are Americans (Shute 12).

The newspaper article I chose was “New Research Suggests Ways to Slow or Prevent Alzheimer’s disease”. This article discusses the study of treating the common risk factors of heart disease can lead to the slow progression of Alzheimer’s disease, according to the Alzheimer’s Association Prevention Conference in Washington, D.C. One of the studies was tracking 891 dementia patients for four years. The ones that were treated for diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol did better on thinking and memory tests than people who didn’t. The second study in the journal Neuron, suggested that avoiding brain injury may have a protective benefit. Researchers found that death of brain cells caused by stroke or head trauma triggers the production of amyloid-beta protein, which forms the brain-tangling plaques of Alzheimer’s (Shute 12).

This article was strong because it gave more than one scenario on how to strengthen the brain to defeat memory loss. Although its main focus was treating heart disease to prevent dementia it gave other helpful tips to stay healthy. Such as by staying physically active and walking can help memory loss. The only limitation to this study would be the fact that the number of victims is said to rise by 450,000 and that not all of them have heart disease.
