His execution is still the subject of great controversy; thirty years after the event took place. He defeated an army of ten-thousand men with only 350 guerilla fighters. He was second in command to Fidel Castro, and made it possible for Castro to seize power of Cuba. He was a man of legendary proportions. Who was this revolutionary? He was Ernesto “Che” Guevara, a man who never gave up cause, revolutionary guerrilla fighter, and strong leader. He was a positive role model to the world.
Born in 1928 into a wealthy Argentinean family, they lived in a predominantly Catholic area, but were atheists and believed in political equality (Calvin Craig Miller, Che Guevara: In Search of a Revolution). Obviously guided by his family ideals, Guevara was a communist. When he was a young boy he began to suffer from sever asthma, which he struggled with all his life, instilling a fighting attitude. As he grew, his experiences and education further shaped his political ideals and matured his indomitable spirit. Everything changed for Guevara in 1954, when he witnessed the CIA backed overthrow of democratically elected Jacob Arbenz in Guatemala. Escaping to Mexico, he met Cuban exiles and decided to embark upon Fidel Castro’s journey to invade Cuba and overthrow corrupt dictator Batista. (Calvin Craig James, Che Guevara: In Search of a Revolution). In 1955 Che Guevara underwent his first specialized guerrilla warfare training. Che Guevara’s legendary revolutionary career began here, but his major contribution was years down the road.
This communist rebel fighter’s major contribution was the huge role he played in Fidel Castro’s rise to power in Cuba. A war beginning in 1957, with three failed air strike attempts from dictator Batista, and ending in 1959 with Batista’s resignation, Che Guevara was essential to the rise of communist rule in Cuba.
