Gothic literature is a form of literature with dark themes often combining horror
and romance. Gothic literature is a unique genre mostly because the readers don’t really
see horror and romance together. When the reader thinks of horror, the reader thinks of
something scary or something that isn’t a good feeling for most people. Then when the
reader thinks of romance the reader thinks of sweet lovely feelings for another person,
and some show it by having a candle lit dinner, and it isn’t really involved with blood or
something having to do with the readers lover dying, and yet Poe and O’Connor both do
it very well. Poe’s writing mostly consisted of dark, ominous tones, O’Connor is of
course a little different. Her writing was in the same category, though her characters
made problems with their own choices. Not only by one person choosing to kill a person
or anima,. O’Connor’s characters chose their fate as most do in the real world. Both Poe
and O’Connor use imprisonment in their stories, but in totally different ways. With Poe,
he kills his victims then traps them for the most part, and then with O’Connor she has her
victims trapped by the choices they made to get to the point where they meet their
ultimate demise.
“I took three planks from the flooring of the chamber, and deposited all between
the scantlings. Then I replaced the boards so cleverly, so cunningly, that no human eye—
not even his—could have detected anything wrong” Page 2 .Poe’s victims are in some
way incased in a way that shows how grotesque and twisted his stories are. Here is a
quote from “A Tell-Tale Heart” that shows his ways with stories. This quote doesn’t tell
that he killed an old man and was hiding him in the floor boards, but that is what’s
happening. After Poe’s character would “get” his victim, he would place his victim in a
spot where no one but him would know where....
