Jack Vettriano, originally Jack Hoggan, was born on Januarary 25, 1951. Vettriano is a Scottish painter. He did not plan on becoming an artist and his talent in painting was not what he intended on making a life out of. Jack started painting as a hobby. He copied famous paintings, mostly impressionist paintings. His first painting was of Monet’s Poppy Fields. His big break was in the year of 1988, when he felt he was ready to display his paintings. They were a huge hit, and still today, Jack is one of the most successful living artists.
I chose the painting One Moment in Time by Jack Vettriano. I chose this piece for a number of reasons. The warm and vibrant colors, the harsh angles, the expression on the woman’s face, and the feeling of betrayal that I sense the woman is feeling. It kind of makes you wonder what is going on at this moment in time, and what has this woman experienced.
The warm red of the background gives this piece a feeling of perhaps, anger. It goes along with the expression on her face. The vibrant white of the woman’s dress sticks out against the dark, warm, red background. The harsh angles of this painting also attracted me to it. The woman’s dress jutting out in the front, and yellow-gold picture frame in the background that has harsh corners give it a sharp, distinct look that I love.
The expression on the woman’s face also drew me to this picture. Why is her eyebrow raised? What is she staring at through the window? What is she so dressed up for? All of these questions ran through my mind as I worked on this piece. It also seems as I worked on this I created stories as to why this woman had the expression on her face that she does. A cheating lover, perhaps. That seems to be a common theme in Jack Vettriano’s paintings. Secret affairs and scandals are created in beautiful ways through Jack’s paintings, which make them feel like they are almost okay to commit.
