Barton Fink.



Barton Fink was an intentionally complicated movie meant to bring a point home to the creative community. It took to mind the concept of the creator, and how he interacts and functions in society. It has left me humbled and brooding, and it’s an experience I feel I cannot unlearn.

Barton is a creative individual, his work is based on his opinion of open-mindedness and others, and that we should listen and acknowledge them. His work talks about giving his own piece of mind to others at his level, and that we should consider those below them. He consider’s himself to be like the Lorax, who, according to Seuss legend, spoke on behalf of the trees, who could not speak for themselves. The Lorax lived among the forest, and harmonized with the trees, but a heartless miser came and began harvesting them to knit them into thneeds. The Lorax attempted to reason with the miser but he did not listen. Eventually, every tree in the land was gone, and when the miser realized his misdoing, the Lorax was gone. The only thing left in what used to be the forest was one seed of a tree.

Barton thinks of himself to be the Lorax, but he does not live and harmonize with the common people. He is like an outsider in their territory, His neighbor used the word tourist. Perhaps what we can really see Barton as doing, is doing his perception of the common people. Barton fails to acknowledge the real grit and trials of the common people, and all the emotions that follow, so it would make sense that he would do well with a play, because it is just an exaggerated simulation based on the prejudiced viewpoints of the creators and beholder.

Barton’s neighbor is much more of a crusader of the common people than he is. In the scene with the hallway and the elevator, Barton’s neighbor pulls a shotgun from a briefcase and guns down two detectives, shouting “I’ll give you piece of mind!” repeatedly with each...
