F.D.A Approves A Stem Cell Trial

Submitted by jollysupz on March 23, 2009

The F.D.A has just approved of trial testing for a therapy created from human embryonic cells, a treatment that will support spinal cord injury. Trial with embryonic stem cells will involve people with very serious spinal injuries. The cells will be injected 7 to 14 days into the spinal cord at the site of injury after the injury occurs, evidence shows therapy will not work for much older injuries. Stem cells derived from adults and fetuses are already being used in some clinical trials, but generally are not as capable of what tissue types they can form, unlike embryonic cells that can turn into any type of cell in the body , so the theory is that stem cells will provide tissue to worn out and nonfunctioning organs, for such things as; diabetes , heart attacks , and many other diseases. Even one scientist has shown videos after receiving the therapy paralyzed rats that were able to walk again, albeit imperfectly.
This process will take a very long time after much physical therapy it will not heal people instantly, it will involve a long time of physical therapy. The most critical safety concern is that if raw embryonic cells are placed into the body, they can form tumors, though most such tumors do not spread like other cancers, unwanted growth in the spinal cord can further damage nerves. Researchers say failing in such a early stage could set back the field for years. A newer technique that allows a patient’s own skin cells to be turned into a cell resembling such embryonic cells. Getting rid of the embryos, and the tissue from that patient would result in, no need for immune suppression to prevent rejection of the transplant. The hope is the cells will repair the myelin, which makes the ability of nerves to send signals. The newer technique however includes putting genes into the skin cells by use of viruses, raising a risk of cancer.
Though for most people who might think differently I do not believe stem cell research is ready to go into...
