World war one was a war that was fought for many reasons and that would benefit the common people. This is untrue in many ways. In order to understand how drastic the effects were we must first see life before the war. Before the war had even started all aspects of life in America seemed to be getting better. The progressive era was an era in which there was change in society, the economy, and politics for the better of the people. During this time government officials had diminished the idea of laissez fair and had become more involved in the economy. Because of this the rich benefited less and gave the poor a chance to better their lives. During this time presidents like Teddy Roosevelt and Taft passed laws (Clayton Anti-trust act) that broke up trusts. The Clayton Anti-trust act helped protect people from the Sherman anti trust act and it being used against them. During this era of progressivism there were a lot of unions that ensured that workers would be guaranteed there rights in the federal government. Before the war the United States was being reformed economically, socially and politically. Railroads were being built and the government was concentrating on the infrastructure of the country. Political reforms were a major factor during this age. The government wasn’t influenced by the rich and large corporations any more. Direct election of senators was given to the people, which was very different then America was used to. During this age even women were beginning to come out of the cult of domesticity. Everything seemed like it was going to keep improving. Yet War was not taken into account. During this time all progressive moments were disregarded and everything was centered around the war. After the war the United States would go into a state of isolation and would disregard individual opinions and lives. After Wilson left office, and Coolidge was elected things seem to have reversed.
