Human Sexuality Paper
The intimacy aspect of a relationship entails many complex components such as honesty, trust, commitment, and communication. Of all these characteristics communication is the most vital. In order for any relationship to flourish, communication must be expressed clearly and interpreted correctly. Since humans are not granted the ability to read each others minds, an exchange of thoughts is the only way to convey a person’s desires, needs and emotions.
It is important to understand that there are two types of communication: verbal and nonverbal. The most common form of communication, of course, is verbal. Speech enables us to translate our thoughts into words. Unfortunately, many relationships end due to a lack of communication. How is your partner supposed to know that you don’t like for you ears to be touched if you do not speak up? Since talking about sex is such a taboo, couples find it hard to approach the subject. To discuss this difficult topic, psychologists suggest first to gently ease into the subject by establishing a comfortable setting and admitting how sensitive it is to talk about in the first place.
Often times it is not “what you say, but how you say it.,” meaning that the majority of communication is nonverbal. Your body language and tone of voice can say a lot before you even say a word. Talking to your partner with your arms cross may indicate that you are defensive and signal to your partner that he or she is untrustworthy. Also, the tone of voice used can have a great effect on how another person will respond. Studies show that people unlikely to trust a high-pitch voice.
Sexual communication differs between men and women. There is even a difference on how the two discuss sex with members of the same gender. Therefore, when men may use sexual terms, that sound rough, demeaning, or non-romantic to women, while women tend to use sexual terms which are less offensive, clinical,...
