Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) is a theory that is often thought of in writing. CHAT is a way of thinking about how our history and environment affect the way we write and learn about our writing. It affects our writing by many factors such as where we write, how we were taught, and how we change our writing format. Many people have written about CHAT and how it influences the writing process. Paul Prior, a researcher of the writing process, has written multiple essays on this topic and has an interesting stance on how he factors it into his research. Margaret Syverson is another writer who has composed an essay on this topic. These two essays have broadened my definition on CHAT. Although CHAT has influenced how we look at the writing process, the concept of CHAT does not just affect writing. CHAT also affects other activities in our life such as sports. It helps us figure out why we play, watch, and even write about sports. Our environments and histories influence our preferences of sports in these categories. This has become so apparent that businesses realize this and have learned how to market according to CHAT in sports. CHAT affects us in ways we don’t even realize and we practice it everyday.
Cultural Historical Activity Theory is often used for learning about learning. This often is studied for learning about how people write. CHAT is interpreted as how people’s environment and history influence their writing. The environment part has to do with people’s environment when they are writing their paper and what actually helps improve their writing. For me, being in an empty room with music playing this is the ideal environment. The fact that I do write like this often shows that my writing contains factors of CHAT.
