Believe it or not, 13 million of the women’s population in the Philippines becomes pregnant before she turns 18 (UNFPA, State of World Population 2003). Most teenage pregnancies in the developed world appear to be unplanned. It is really unimaginable that the rate of contraception use among teens is closely equal to the rate of the older women. This means that teens today are exposed to this kind of activity that is prohibited at this early age.
Nowadays, girls become intoxicated before engaging in an intended or unintended sexual activity that makes them feel numb and less painful (Leonard Sax, 2005). Rape, which is the majority factor in pregnancy, is 70% out of 100% as one of the causes of teenage pregnancy. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, 29% of the female adolescents are pressured to have sex, 33% are happily sexually active, 24% regret that they had sex and 14% out of the total of 100% are not sexually active.
The rate of the adolescents who are sexually active is continuously growing while the number of teenagers becoming pregnant is also increasing. Also, according to the Guttmacher Institute, the decline of the teenage pregnancy is because of the abstinence, the act or practice of abstaining from sexual intercourse, and to the effective use of contraceptives, 25% and 75% respectively. As we can see, the rate of the abstinence is way lower compared to the contraceptives which also means that 25% of the sexually active partners performs an unprotected sex where they eschewed the use of condoms.
There are still several causes of becoming teenage moms. Engaging oneself in a sexual intercourse with the mixed messages about sex and relationship could lead the female adolescent to become a teenage mom (Gill Francis, 2000).
