MY THOUGHTS, FAMILY PORTRAIT
Deciding what you are going to do about your career is a life long process. Quite often thinking about your career can take precedence over everything else in your life. You may question it as you sit in traffic with another 5 miles and 45 minutes to go before you get to work or you may feel that you are just not making enough money. If you have a family you may feel that your career/job keeps you from spending enough time with them. You might even decide to start a family or purchase a house and realize that you do not have enough income to realize that goal or you will need to leave this area in order to purchase a home. Imagine the struggle of a single parent working full-time and going to school 2 nights a week (education better be worth it).
There are many things that happen to us that make us consider/reconsider our career choice/direction. Imagine the loss of a spouse, divorce, the birth of a child, the child moving out, or you getting laid off. These are several of the large occurrences in our life that can whack us into considering/reconsidering what we are doing for work.
Our identity can also be determined by what we do for work. Usually when people meet for the first time they ask, “what do you do for work?” It is hard to get away from its influences and better yet what caused it to begin with in the first place.
The experiences we have as we were growing up lay the foundation that develops our attitude about work. It is possible that your family owned a business and you spent time working in it. That experience gives you an insight and appreciation into work. Because of that experience you may never want to own a business or determine that owning a business is the only way that you will be satisfied working.
