For the entirety of its 100 minutes, the film proves beyond any doubt as to why it was proclaimed the best documentary of 2006. It is part of former Vice President Al Gore’s long-running mission to promote our environment and bring awareness to the problem of climate change. After eighteen years, he has gone from simple slide shows to high-tech animations to now receiving Oscar awards. It presents facts with the right amount of humor, hope, and contempt. Many times he uses personal stories to stress a point and alarming visuals to make a statement. But essentially, this movie is still the same lecture with the same message and, more importantly, with the same impact as when it was given in over a thousand lecture halls around the globe.

It’s common knowledge that rising global temperature is a big problem. However, I never expected the extent of damage it is actually causing. The truth is, we are facing a crisis bigger than warmer days, overworked air-conditions and painful sunburns. Apparently, everything in our world is interrelated. For example, as the oceans get warmer, storms grow stronger. I never associated global warming with precipitation. However, more rains will be coming in these one time big storm events. Ironically, as some countries are currently experiencing these record breaking downpours and flooding, others are suffering from severe droughts and heat waves. Global warming not only increases precipitation, but also relocates it. There is more evaporation in the ocean which seeds the clouds. However, the heat also sucks moisture out of the soil. This leaves many parts of the world dry and arid, without water, rain, and edible crops. The earth’s climate is also like a big engine for redistributing heat from the equator to the poles. This system of ocean currents and wind currents are all linked together in a single loop.
