Education is certainly the vehicle to increasing viability in the job market. We have all heard the old cliché from our parents; “You have to get good grades so you can get into a good college so you can get a good job and make a lot of money.” Those words are always spoken with conviction in hopes of motivating an adolescent to reach for a better life; presumably a better life than those parents can provide. Education is valued because it is a means for imparting knowledge and skills; however the mere acquisition of concepts and techniques should not be an end in itself.
As we make our way through school and connect ourselves to an idea that promises a brighter future, the real key is to attach a sense of purpose for any expectations and with every experience extrapolate a larger learning. While an education will create opportunity; the desired goal should be to increase knowledge, enhance awareness, the ability to think critically, but most important, enrich aptitude and broaden perspectives. It is the means to contribute to the development of an individual’s character, acquire proficiency, and encourage a fundamental purpose. With this in mind, I have decided to return to school and work toward a Masters in Organizational Communications.
There is a philosophical term called, the “Egocentric Predicament.” Simply stated, we cannot know how other people perceive experiences or fully comprehend events and happenings in other places, states, countries, or other periods of history because we are locked in our own bodies, in our own time, and within the confines of what we can see or touch. Even if we have a familiarity with a particular circumstance, how each individual relates, deals with an issue, or what is learned from it will vary. So, our perception and the way we identify with each other, see the world, and ultimately what we can know and understand, is very limited.
