Descriptive Essay
(carnival)
I have always been amazed by carnival rides. It is so crazy that ordinary people will step off the ground to be tossed through the air like vegetables in a food processor. It’s amazing that at some time in history someone thought that people would enjoy this kind of thing. For me, it is the thrill and excitement of having survived the ride that keeps me coming back for more. My first experience with a carnival ride was a Ferris wheel at the Klamath County Fair. Looking at it spinning the life out of its sardine-caged prisoners, I was dumbstruck. My first ride gave me an instant rush of adrenaline. As the ride started, a lump in my throat pulsed like a heart ready to walk the plank. As the ride gained speed, gravity built up against my body until I was unable to move. There was a slight pause as the wheel reached the top of its climb it allowed my body to relax briefly to what I thought was normal. Then there was a movement of stomach-turning sickness as the machine continued its rotation and I dropped back toward the earth. A cymbal-like sound vibrated through the air as the wheel reached the bottom, and to my surprise I began to go up again. Each time around gave me more confidence in the turning machine. When another nerve-wrecking climb failed to follow the last, the ride was finally over, and I knew I was addicted. I was physically and emotionally drained, I followed the passengers down the clinging metal steps to reach safety. What if you leave "I was" out of the last sentence? That eliminates the comma splice and actually makes a very elegant adjective out of the first part. I was now out of danger, but only to have the opportunity to ride again. My fascination with these amazing rides has been embedded in my soul. A trip on the gigantic Ferris wheel never fails to thrill me.
