Why the Radio isn’t what it used to be
Imagine yourself driving down the road and you turn on the radio but to your dismay all that’s on are commercials. Let’s say it’s about 8 in the morning and you’re driving to work and turn on the radio and on every channel there’s some guy laughing excessively hard over stupid jokes. Have you ever wondered why when all you want is to listen to the radio but sometimes it’s nearly impossible to listen to music right away? It’s called corporate radio.
If you take a look at the radio from a marketing professional point of view, it’s pretty easy to figure out that there is millions to be made from it. The Radio appeals to millions of people usually more than once a day, every day. From the time you wake up with your alarm, your drive to work or school, at work sometimes for some people, your drive back home, and some people even listen to it while trying to fall asleep at night. It’s a big part of some people’s lives whether they know it or not. And it’s all being controlled by huge corporations and its militaristic plan of advertisement and what they call “entertainment”. From the Telecommunications act of 1996, buying and relocations of stations on FM and AM occurred, and this was only the beginning. Soon after the public would see and experience the changes in the radio.
Dozens of radio stations now fall under a company known as “
Cumulus”. Cumulus has been around for over a decade now, and since the Telecommunications act of 1996, have acquired over 100 radio stations from the Midwest to the east coast in over half the states in the United States. They are one of the biggest radio corporations in the world. Their mission, and other corporations, since the implementation of the act in 1996, was to help finance young fledgling radio companies and then slowly implement regulations on them in what they call “guidance”.
