“It’s Getting Hot in Here”
On December 5, 2007; hundreds of displaced Somalian citizens both young and old lined the banks of the Shabelle River, in hopes of receiving aid in the form of a little grain or rice. FEMA held a job fair in search of a few good men and/or women, and the torrential down-pours on the northwest coast of the United States finally stopped. At first glance most would probably view these events as mere coincidences, random occurrences; but while they are random in nature, they all hold one thing in common, global warming. To many, global warming is a myth; a ploy devised by the EPA and some secret society, implemented in order to control the world oil market. To others it is an “unavoidable inevitably”; it’s happening, will continue to happen, and there is absolutely nothing anybody can do about it. Yet to the thousands—displaced, starving, cold, and wet—in Oregon, Washington State, and Somalia; global warming is very real. Global warming is a worldwide problem and along with it come worldwide consequences. Contrary to popular belief, global warming is not an unavoidable inevitability; it is very real and caused by human activity—the burning of fossil fuels and cutting down of forests.
Global Warming is defined as, “An increase in the [E]arth's atmospheric and oceanic temperatures widely predicted to occur due to an increase in the greenhouse effect resulting especially from pollution” (Merriam-Webster). Global warming refers to an average increase in the Earth's temperature, which in turn causes changes in the climate. Human industry and other activities such as deforestation emit increasingly large quantities of gas, in particular carbon dioxide (CO2), into the atmosphere. These emissions, along with the already present atmospheric gasses, act as a sort of blanket over the surface of the Earth; actively absorbing the radiation and heat from the Sun, and in turn keeping the Earth warmer than it should be (EPA)....
