“Obesity, the Silent Killer.” Obesity is becoming a major threat to people all over the world, especially in the United States. The short definition of obesity is an excessive amount of fat in the body. Obesity is prevalent in girls as well as boys. For girls if your total body weight is more than 32 percent fat, they are considered to be obese. For boys if your total body weight is more than 25 percent fat, then they are also considered to be obese. (ERIC Digest, 1990)
It affects adults as well as children, but the foundation for adult obesity is poor choices in adolescence. “Over the past three decades, the childhood obesity rate has more than doubled for preschool children aged 2-5 years and adolescents aged 12-19 years, and it has more than tripled for children aged 6-11 years. At present, approximately nine million children over 6 years of age are considered obese.” (SITE iom) This great epidemic is affecting anyone and everyone in some way, whether someone is young, old, tall, short, and it doesn’t matter what race or religion you are. There has to be a way to fight these obesity problems, and put it to a stop early in children’s lives to prevent later damage to their body.
Morgan Spurlock, director of the movie “Super Size Me” once said, “The food is absolutely atrocious, and parents have no idea. Parents are giving their kids three dollars and saying, 'Okay, see you later. Go off to school and have a good lunch.” Why is this a problem? This is a problem because kids do not care if something has 2 calories or 2000 calories, if it’s good, they will eat it. Young children’s metabolisms are moving at a very quick rate, which allows them to eat almost whatever they want, but eating whatever they want all the time will eventually catch up to them no matter what your age is. I don’t think that you should totally cut junk food and fast food out of every kid’s diet, but the keyword is moderation. Going to McDonalds once or maybe twice, in my opinion...
