The Poem ‘To My Mother’ was written by the infamous, yet twisted Edgar Allen Poe. Within this poem, it concludes a new definition of the word ‘Mother’ while encountering upon the coincidence of death, and furthermore speaking of the love that was portrayed for the wife and the Mother.
According to the poem ‘To My Mother’, the new definition of a Mother would be a women, committed to loving a child even if it was not her own child to adore. For Example: ‘None so devotional as that of “Mother”’(Line 4), which exemplifies the fact that the stand-in Mother was devoted to loving Edgar Allen Poe as a child. In addition to the text above, it says, ‘“as that of ‘Mother”’. This is perceived as not ‘a’ Mother, which can be interpreted as anyone‘s mother but it is perceived as only Edgar‘s Mother and no one else’s. Also, the word Mother in the above text has quotations around it to stipulate the fact that although this women was not his biological birth mother, in which Poe considered her to be. The perfect quote to prove this would be, “And thus are dearer than the mother I knew”(Line 12). Meaning that this women stood as a substitute for Edgar’s Motherly figure within his life. It seems as though there is resentment in the quote above, the word ‘mother’ is not capitalized unlike the others in which, it is regarding the women that took Edgar under her wing.
