“I am an Alcoholic and a Drug Addict and a Criminal.” Is the quote that rang out throughout James Frey’s “memoir” A Million Little Pieces. James Frey’s life was said to be materialized in his books A Million Little Pieces and its sequel My Friend Leonard, but not all of it was a lie. A lot of the people, places, and events in Frey’s novels are changed but the story for the most part is real.
James Frey was born in Cleveland Ohio is 1969, and spent most of his childhood in Ohio and Michigan. Through out his childhood he also lived in Boston, North Carolina, Brazil, London, Paris, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Frey graduated high school in 1988 and went on to college at Denison University and the Art Institute of Chicago.
While living in Los Angeles Frey worked as a screenwriter, director, and a producer. His favorite job was being a screenwriter and decided he wanted to write a memoir of his life. In May of 2003 he published his first book A Million Little Pieces. This book still sits on the top of the New York Times best-seller list. Frey’s second book My Friend Leonard was published in 2005 as a sequel. This book also has spent some time atop the New York Times best-seller list.
Frey was in fact arrested in October 1992 for drunk driving (he was issued two traffic tickets and a separate misdemeanor criminals summons for having an open bottle of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer in his car.) Frey was also arrested by Michigan cops in June 1988 and charged with drunk driving and failure to carry his driver’s license. After St. Joseph Township cops saw his car weaving in traffic, Frey, then 18, was pulled over and found d to be drunk, but wasn’t taken to jail because the county jail “did not want him in their facility” because he had chicken pox.
With Frey being a fairly new author it is hard to say what his greatest work is. Both of his books are heart wrenching and leave you in a state of shock. Frey’s books are said to be “refreshing” and “not...
