One of the most important qualities that can be portrayed by a Christian is respect of authorities. The Webster dictionary defines respect as the condition of being esteemed or honored. I don’t think I have been living out that whole definition in my life. I have been struggling with giving my utmost respect for quite some time. I don’t know how it ever came upon me but it has been one of the toughest things to deal with in my life. Authority figures have almost seemed like a burden to me for the longest time. In school I either hated my teachers or really liked them; there was really no in between factor. Throughout elementary school I never really had any problems with respect and obedience so I don’t see how it ever got incorporated in my life, but somehow it weaved its way in. I think also as my respect for authority figures decreased so did my intensity and fire for God. Once things like that happen you start to think. I want to start being able to give my utmost respect to those in authority but I’m going to need a lot of help from friends, family, and God.
The following are common questions asked regarding respect and I will try to answer them in this essay: Why is authority needed, what is respect, do adults show respect, who is wiser parents/children, consequences, how issue could resolve, why disrespect is shown, and where disrespect is seen.
Why is authority essential? If you think about it, many people are not grateful for the authority policies we have. They may annoy the public with speeding tickets and fines, but their intended meaning is to do much more than annoy people. They help us. How? By capturing and arresting criminals who have committed serious crimes in our home town. They protect us from future harm. The authority in community is empowered to administer punishment against wrongdoers. I live in a small town called Duenweg where there is about one police officer (no exaggeration).
