Violent crime is a major issue in Toronto. Every year countless lives are affected, whether they are family and friends of the victims, or of the perpetrators of crime. Taking time to study the issues, potential causes, and solutions is necessary for understanding the problems and potentially remedying them. Sociological theories are an effective way to explain deviance in a society. Functionalist theories can be employed in understanding violent crimes in the GTA. These theories can shed light on deviant problems such as violent crime, and help increase understanding while potentially making it possible to reduce or minimize these crimes. Over the past three years, violence in Toronto has been explained by functional theories. Focus will be placed on these last three years since data is most readily available from these times.
According to Malinowski, long term observation of society is the only way to properly understand how that society operates . Without observing a culture for an extended period of time it would be impossible to tell the difference between what actually goes on, and what is said to go on. By employing this method of observation it is possible to see patterns in the culture and itemize units of the culture, enabling the ability to compare different societies . Without fully understanding the causes it would be impossible to try to make any conclusions, or develop ways of remedying the problem.
