For some teenagers my age that grows up in Oakland school is not everything but something to do until their able to get out of the hood. To me however, school is everything and it means more to me than anything. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said “Intelligence and character is the goal of true education”. True education is definitely my goal. My family has not had the best of luck in going to college. My mom dropped out of college when she got pregnant with me and, never went back. My father, who never stuck around, never bothered to go to college after graduating from high school but, this has not and will not stop me it only drives me to achieve. My work habits are appreciative. I attend church regularly, I usher and I hold the positions as Corresponding and Sunday School Secretary. My church obligations have been very useful to me, in that I learned responsibility and secretarial skills. School related I am currently affiliated with the Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP), the Young Black Scholars (YBS), the Black Student Union (BSU) and Leadership, where I hold the position as Commissioner of Public Affairs. These activities have also provided me with essential skills. For instance, from being on leadership for the past two years I have learned and shown leadership roles and dependability. EAOP, YBS and BSU have expanded my educational abilities and social skills. Out side of school and church I am out spending time with my family. Working is a big concern for me but, when it calls for me to be away from home and school it becomes a distraction so, I occasionally braid hair on the side to get some source of income. I often try to engage myself in extracurricular activities during my free time. I go to the Elderly Center with my great grandmother, who I am very close to, and sit and talk to some of the men women, who rarely get any visitors.
