Taiga- is coniferous forests that cover most of Canada, Finland, Sweden, Alaska, Kazakhstan, Northern Europe and Russia (especially in Siberia), and also parts of the EXTREMELY north continental United States. The taiga is the world’s largest biome. In Canada the term “boreal forest” is used, it means the southern part of the biome. Less than 8% of the Boreal forest is protected from development and more than 50% has been allocated to logging companies for cutting. Some of the products from logged Boreal forests include toilet paper, copy paper, newsprint and lumber. More than 80% of Boreal forest products from Canada are exported for consumption and processing in the United States. Major and well known purchasers of pulp, paper and lumber from the Canadian Boreal forest include Kimberly-Clark, New York Times, Home Depot, and Random House. For 5-6 months out of the year the sun doesn’t rise very far above the horizon, and the temperature varies from −50°C to 30°C throughout the entire year. The taiga also contains very closely spaced trees, so it looks like a wall of trees. Mainly pine and spruce trees are in the taiga.
The main cause of environmental damage is illegal logging of the trees. If we keep letting people cut down trees illegally then the forest will be gone. We will also lose oxygen because a lot of the world’s oxygen comes from the taiga, from all the trees.
We can fix that by enforcing the logging laws more efficiently and punishing those who do it more. Because if we don’t they will keep doing it, if we only give them little fines they won’t stop. Put the offenders in jail, that will make slow down more.
