Although my first day at School was overwhelming, I listened intently to my upper classmates speak about how much the School education had meant to them, and how their lives were transformed. It was during this Mass of the Holy Spirit, which was being celebrated outdoors, where I observed two students photographing the event. As I watched them, I became struck with the idea of how wonderful it would be if I could pursue and develop my subtle interest in photography and journalism. Little did I know that I would soon be walking in their footsteps.
Just a few weeks into my freshman year, one of the daily announcements caught my attention: Anyone interested in joining the yearbook staff should report to room 018C during lunch break. I eagerly signed up, and was excited to enter into the ‘world of journalism.’ During the first meeting I saw the same two photographers that had caught my eye at the first Mass of the year. I was in awe of their abilities, as they produced photographs that were truly superior to anything I could hope to create.
As my freshman year progressed I worked diligently for the yearbook, signing up to photograph as many events as I possibly could while fulfilling my responsibilities for my studies. I concluded the year with high hopes by applying for an editorial position, to which I was denied. I began my sophomore year dedicated to continue to work hard and provide coverage of School events for the yearbook. It was sheer delight when I was approached by the moderator offering me the opportunity to be promoted to a photography editor. I relished in this new endeavor, and I was so thankful to have such support in nurturing my goal in becoming a photography editor.
As a photography editor during my sophomore & junior years, the opportunity to learn by observing the lead editors and working closely with all levels of editorial staff was welcomed with earnest. These observations developed my skills of organization and...
