The Technical Writing Process
Technical writing breaks down into three main steps. Those three steps are pre-write, write, and rewriting. These three steps can be used to create a user manual to support customers in purchasing and using software created by our company. With pre-writing, we can use this step to generate the information needed to create the user manual. After gathering our information for the user manual we can proceed to the next step which is the writing step. In the writing step we can create a rough draft of our user manual. The final step is rewriting the rough draft and finalizing the user manual. The rewriting step gives the chance to perfect the document.
The objective of technical writing is to help you write well. Technical writing, in a sense, is the presentation of information that helps the reader solve a particular problem. In this scenario, technical writing will help us create a user manual which will allow users of the software the smoothest experience possible. Technical writing gives us the tools needed to inform the audience of the information needed and the steps required to use the software properly. Technical writing is used to clarify information so that it can be understood by the audience you are writing for.
During the pre-writing step we are able to gather the information needed to create a user manual that is clear, concise, and informative. This step allows us to examine what the purpose of the user manual will be and to determine the goals of the user manual. In this step we can consider the type of audience we are writing for while gathering the data needed to create the user manual. We can also determine how the content will be provided to the audience during this step.
