Evolution vs. Creationism
Where do we come from? Where are we going? These are a few of the questions that many people may find themselves asking. The origin and purpose of life are left to us to figure out. People are very sensitive about these subjects, finding it hard to accept the viewpoints of others. The great debate of evolution verse creationism has been around for several years. The Concise Oxford Dictionary says that, “creationism is the belief that the universe and living organisms originated from specific acts of divine creation.” That same dictionary also says that evolution is “the process by which different kinds of living organisms are believed to have developed from earlier forms, especially by natural selection.” Though both of these definition are totally different, they have one thing in common and that’s the word “belief “.
America was founded on the concepts of idealism and opportunism; we all are brought up to take advantage of our opportunities and succeed to the best of our abilities. The idea of evolution is to go against these ideals of creationism. Evolution occurs at random, meaning the human race did not "earn" its place as “Supreme Being” of the earth. As Americans, we see ourselves working toward a society that is closer and closer to perfection, but as individuals, we are learned to be the best that we can be. The theory of evolution explains to us that we are adapting to random changes without even knowing it. An example of random change would be the Galapagos Finches. They are similar in many ways except of their beaks. Some Finches have longer and slimmer beaks that are used to pick up the small seeds; others Finches have short, large, and powerful beaks used for crushing the bigger seeds. Some Finches with smaller, fine beaks –use them for obtaining small insects. Fossil evidence has concluded that all of these birds had a common ancestor that evolved into the different species of Finches we see today....
