Colin Powell

Do you know what it’s like to serve your country in numerous wars? Powell has also served as the 65th Secretary of State. Powell has changed this country for the better and inspired minorities to become involved in government and politics.
Colin came into the world April 5th, 1937 in Harlem, New York. Born at around the time of the end of the great depression jobs were scarce, and prejudice was strong. Luther Theophilus Powell, and Maud Ariel McKoy the parents of Colin Powell, were both Jamaican immigrates. Maud had a high school diploma but, Luther had to drop out of school to find work. The Powells weren’t wealthy but luckier than others. They had food on the table and steady work.
In 1954 Colin graduated from Morris High School. Colin wasn’t suck a good student. He usually averaged C’s. Education was important to the Powells, so Colin applied to New York University (NYU), and the city college of New York (CCNY). To his surprise he was accepted to both. With a tuition of ten dollars he chose CCNY.
Colin mother suggested that he major in engineering, but Colin soon realized he didn’t have the math or science skills for that. Colin did enjoy geology he soon came to major in it. However Colin wouldn’t persue this career. While on campus Colin noticed a group of young men in uniform, These men were part of the Reserve Officers Training Corps, or ROTC, an educational program for military officers. Colin would end up joining the ROTC in the fall of 1954, his freshman year.
While in the ROTC Colin would quote “ For the first time in my life I was a member of a brother hood. The discipline, the structure, the desire, the sense of belonging were what I craved… I found a selflessness within our ranks that reminded me of the caring at mosphere within my family.
