1. Leadership: Please describe an incident from your personal experiences that typifies your definition of leadership. Specifically address ethics, diversity, collaboration and motivation.
Legendary Football Player and Coach Vince Lombardi once said “Leaders are not born. They are made. They are made just like anything else . . . through hard work. That's the price we have to pay to achieve that goal or any goal.” Leadership is a trait that’s seasoned through experience. It is something that is never completely perfected as new situations and interactions with different types of people constantly contribute to one’s leadership abilities. I have had many experiences throughout my life time that have challenged and ultimately strengthened my leadership skills; however, one experience that typified my definition of leadership was my Six Sigma Green Belt Project while working at Merrill Lynch.
Upon starting my position at Merrill Lynch in Marketing Technology, I inherited a very unstable and legacy marketing application called Investor Link. This application was an application that was altered and changed with just in time short term fixes rather than long term solutions. I realized that if I was to manage this application, I had to clean it up. I began to analyze all the daily processes to reevaluate their necessity and their efficiency. I sat down with the end users to understand the existing issues and clarify the requirements. I came to the conclusion that one of the biggest issues with this application was the turnaround time of a daily process that sent out fulfillment to clients. From my experience in college, I realized that the best way of improving this process was to use the Six Sigma methodology. Hence, I made the bold move and approached my manager to analyze this process as part of my Six Sigma Green Belt project.
This was a very difficult decision for me because I had only been working for the Marketing Technology...
