Fear of Knowledge

Education becomes more vital for the future of our children with every year that passes. The majority of parents within the United States rely on public schools to educate their children. Due to fear and ignorance we are failing to teach the most ancient and relevant subject known to mankind: Sexuality.
When looking into the eyes of a twelve-year-old, sex is the last thing an adult wants to think about, let alone explain how the reproductive process works, and answer questions about orgasms, and dispel urban myths, like not being able to get pregnant if you have sex standing up. Talking to our youth about sex is a scary idea, but we have used excuses to prolong our comfort until many of us are now talking to our children’s children. Sexual responsibility education is a subject in which schools across the nation are receiving consistent F’s. The time has come for the scientific education of sex for American teenagers. Those who refuse to learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.
We are an enlightened culture, with many technological advances; so why have we yet to find a way to talk about sex without fear? The need for sexuality education was realized by the National Education Association as early as 1912. Over the course of ninety-six years information has been available, but not made available. In the 1960’s organized groups began arguing against sex education in schools. They claimed that the information was pornographic in nature. (Pardini Priscilla). Unfortunately, our children are paying for our sins, because we want to shelter them from reality. Great students and great educators can not exist unless they have great knowledge to share and absorb. We are limiting the greatness of our youth with foolish blunders.
