I cannot describe how honored I am to stand before you. Scholars Without Borders has been an incredible accomplishment for the SDSU community. It promotes international involvement as well as recognition of outstanding scholarly achievement. I think we all should give our thanks to the late Ron Moffatt and the members of the Scholars Without Borders Board who provided with this opportunity.
Currently, I am a sophomore and a pre-major Business Administration student. I work at the International Student Center, and one of aspiring hopes is to study abroad in Spain. As a student, originally from Bulgaria, this honor society is perfectly suited for me, because it gives me the chance to participate in our community’s global involvement. As a highly educated society we need to help people better understand the world, starting with its geography. When I first came here from Bulgaria, many people asked me where Bulgaria is located. They wanted to know, whether it is a city in the US or some mysterious country in Africa or the Middle East. Little did they know it is actually a country in Europe. Comments and questions like these were absolutely shocking to me, I had no idea that people in the US had no information of countries outside their borders. This is when I realized that our humanity needs to establish the principle of global citizenship.
To me, global citizenship is patriotism to the world as a whole. It is a mindset which erases all separation and ignorance caused by government-established borders, language, culture, and politics. By having such a mindset I know people will feel more involved in the world and actually care to know about other nations. Global citizenship can create a unity with everyone even though we are all different. It can initiate patriotism to humanity in the world, not just my school or neighbourhood.
