Year 10 Balloon Experiment

Submitted by lachlan438 on February 20, 2009

Aim: To find how the ratio of how much air to how far a balloon will go.
Hypothesis: I think that the more air in the balloon the farther it will go. I also think that the air resistance that the balloon will experience because of more air will not make the balloon lose any power so resulting in the graph having no curve.
Materials:
• 1m ruler
• String
• Drinking straw
• Air Pump
• 9 long balloons
• Sticky tape
• 2 Chairs
Method:
1. Two chairs were placed at each end of the room.
2. String was tired around the top of one chair’s leg.
3. The free end of the string was threaded through the drinking straw; once this was completed it was then tired on to the top of the other chairs leg.
4. The straw was taking back to a starting position.
5. A pump was then used to blow a balloon up the first test size.
6. The back on the balloon was then held tight so that no air was able to escape; during this another person attached the balloon to the straw.
7. Attachment was completed and the back of the balloon was then let go.
8. The distance was measured from the starting point the front the balloon.
9. Steps 5-8 were repeated 3 times for each balloon test size then averaged.
Results:
Balloon Size Test Results 1 Test Results 2 Test Results 3 Average
15cm 30cm 45cm 50cm 41cm
20cm 50cm 45cm 70cm 55cm
25cm 50cm 70cm 90cm 70cm
30cm 130cm 90cm 50cm 270cm

Comments: My hypothesis was wrong, because at 30cm the balloon just takes off. I think this experiment could have been improved by getting something to stop the string falling down on the chair leg. We had to pull it back up all of the time.
