The word ‘News’ comes from the word ‘New’. It also stands for North, South, East, West and the word ‘Paper’ has a special meaning to with regard to the newspaper. It means ‘Past and Present Event Report’. The newspaper is thus a publication carrying information or news happening around the orb. A newspaper is comprised of current news, editorial, features, articles and advertisements. Almost all newspapers also have a column with reader’s views called “Letters to the Editor”.
Has there been a time when you opened your newspaper and you found advertisements all over the pages? I am sure you must have felt that the day’s newspaper was not meant for news but for advertisements! The reason you see so many ads in the newspaper is because ads in the newspaper are a source of revenue for the publishing house. This is how you have to pay just a rupee for a newspaper and at times get it free of cost as well.
Newspaper is printed on low cost paper called “Newsprint”. Newsprint is prepared from wood pulp by recycling paper. The first paper from wood pulp was made by Charles Fenerty of Canada in 1828. The cost and the increase in supply of rags led him to invent newsprint. Julius Caesar realise that the citizens should be well informed about the happening in their country or state like government, military campaign, trails and execution.
Initially large white boards called Acta Diurna (Daily events) were used to keep the public informed about the social and political happenings. Handwritten news-sheets were called as gazettes or Avisi. Johann modern newspaper. The Courant was the first daily English newspaper by Edward Mallet on 11th March, 1702 and soon passed on to Samuel Buckley.
Newspapers should be read by everyone every day. It makes individuals aware of the current affairs like social, political, economic and cultural happenings. Newspaper talk about the crime and the ways to prevent them, political meetings...
