Will white corn kernels pop more than yellow?
I. Purpose:
To find out if the color of corn kernels (white or yellow) affects the amount of popcorn produced.
A. Popcorn pops because like all grains, it contains water. When a popcorn kernel is heated above the boiling point of 212 degrees Fahrenheit, this water turns to steam. This steam creates pressure within the kernel causing the kernel to explode and turn itself inside out.
B. Will white corn kernels pop more than yellow?
II. Hypothesis:
If white and yellow corn kernels are popped, then I think that more of the white kernels will pop.
A. On average white kernels are larger than yellow one.
B. Article: Gene Flow from GE to conventional maize using real- time PCR.
III. Materials:
1. White and yellow popcorn kernels.
2. Air popper
3. Two bowls
4. Graduated cylinder
5. Balance scale
IV. Methods:
I will first measure an equal density for both white and yellow kernels. Then separately popping them in the air popper and also putting them in separate bowls. Last I will get about 5 people to observe and say which one they think produced more.
