Hamlet has a handle on scandal.
QUEEN: O Hamlet, speak no more: Thou turn’st mine eyes into my very soul, And there I see such black and grained spots As will not leave their tinct.
HAMLET: Nay, but to live In the rank sweat of an enseamed bed, Stew’d in corruption, honeying, and making love Over the nasty sty. (Hamlet .3. 4. 90-95) In this quote it is showing that Hamlet’s motivation for killing Claudius is not to avenge his father’s death, but because of his love for his mother Gertrude. Hamlet does not have the son type of love, it is a sexual love. Through out scene four Hamlets in seen as throwing himself at his mother, be he is jealous of Claudius, and does not want his mother to go to bed with him. Hamlet has held back such a desire to take the late King’s place in his mother’s heart that is why Hamlet feels the need to get rid of Claudius. Claudius came in and took over Gertrude’s heart before Hamlet had the chance; the place that Hamlet had always longed to have, the place next to her in bed.
Hamlet did not kill Claudius until his mother had already died. This is a sign that Hamlet did not want to hurt his mother because of the sexual feelings he had for her. Hamlet felt that killing Claudius would hurt his mother too much, and he could not do that to her. Hamlet wants to save Gertrude from Claudius because of his feelings for her, his encestual feelings, not maternal ones. Hamlet himself says that women can not be trusted and that is why Hamlet has a hard time telling his mother the feelings he has for her.
Hamlet has a love triangle going on, not only his he in love with his mother but Hamlet is also in love with Ophelia. Hamlet is motivated by an encestual urge, to sleep with his mother for various reasons. Hamlet had lost the love of his life Ophelia, which sends him into anger mode that has to be exerted somehow.
