It is definitely possible to gain a thorough understanding of current terrorist operations and motivations by examining history. There have been a number of significant and symbolic events throughout time that have contributed to the development of tactics and inspirations we see utilised by terrorist groups of today. The origins of these operations and motivations began with the European street revolutions in the mid nineteenth century and the revolutionary actions and conflicts in Russia and Ireland at the beginning of the twentieth century. Decades later we saw the influence that the proclamation of the Atlantic Charter had on post war anticolonial struggles at the conclusion of the Second World War. It will be argued that the numerous different terrorist organisations formed as a direct result of this event refined and adapted these historical terrorist operations and motivations even further, whilst also advancing the concept of international and religious terrorism. All of the above events have played a significant role in the current motivations of modern day terrorist groups and the way they undertake their operations across the globe. It is no coincidence that these groups have gained inspiration and employed tactics developed and exploited by terrorist groups of the past, but only now, with the significant advancement in technology available today has there been a momentous increase in the effectiveness of such tactics. Current ideologies and objectives of terrorist organisations of today are also very similar, and in a lot of cases, identical to those of the past. These groups see themselves in comparable situations to there predecessors, they are aware of the previous successes and failures of such groups and utilise, adjust and adapt this knowledge to refine their motivations and objectives towards achieving their ultimate cause.
