AIDs in Africa

AIDS has affected the African continent over the last two decades killing millions of young adults and orphaning millions of children. AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. AIDS is caused by a virus called HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. This virus is passed from one person to another when infected blood, semen, or vaginal fluids come in contact with an uninfected person. AIDs has spread throughout Africa because of the lack of education on unsafe sex. Some families in Africa do not have enough money to send their children to school. There are many women that are force to have sex because Africa is a male dominate country. These are some reason why I think AIDs is continuing to spread throughout Africa.
AIDS is the largest threat to Africa with around 32% of the world’s HIV infected people living in the continent. In seven of the African nations more than 30% of the populations are HIV positive. A total of 6% of women and 3% of men aged 15–19 years tested HIV-positive, compared with about 35% of women and 30–32% of men in their 30s. [UNAIDS] The epidemic has killed more than 25 million people and orphaned an estimated 12 million children. AIDS has taken over the already deprived African economies leaving them totally dependent on external funding for prevention programs and treatment of the infected people. The average life expectancy in Sub Saharan African nations has been reduced by 40% of the epidemic. [The World Bank Group]
