When you look at the first poem ‘Hiroshima’ you immediately recognize that it’s a very short poem. it’s written in the third person, the author is the narrator and he/she gives insight into the situation. I have no idea when the poem is written, maybe it’s written somewhere in de Second World War, because Hiroshima is famous of the atomic bomb in the war. And the book ‘1984’ is also written in this time period. I think that the poem takes place in the air, because ‘The gloved finger’ is described, so probably this indicates a pilot who is going to press the button to fire off a bomb. There is nothing said about a character in the poem, but I guess the pilot is a very thoughtful person. He doesn’t press the button immediately but ‘The gloved finger poised, pressed’. That’s the only thing we know about the character in this poem, or, actually there isn’t even a character, it’s my own interpretation. In this small poem some techniques are used. Alliteration is used; ‘a single silver sliver’ and ‘hazy heat’. The writer uses shorter and longer sentences, this has a special effect on the poem. Especially the sentence before the last sentence, he suddenly ends this sentence and then he starts a new one.
A second’s silence, and
Oblivion.
The author is very accurate with his use of words, he wants to say very much with only a few words. He has great attention to detail, many adjectives are used do describe the situation. The tone in the poem is sad. This is quite logical because it is about firing off a bomb so a lot of people will be killed. Especially the ending: ‘Oblivion’ gives me a unpleasant feeling. Because this means that everything is destroyed.
I think we had to read and analyse this poem because it is about pushing a button and a bomb will be fired off. This is linked to the book ‘1984’ because a lot occurs in here.
