Universal Health Care

Right now the health care system in the United States is flawed. The answer to America’s problem is Canada’s Universal health care system. Both systems have their flaws and problems. The United States system, however, is too expensive and the people who really need it cannot afford the coverage. I am going to explain why it would be in our best interest to switch to Canada’s universal health care system.
The United States is the only developed nation that does not have a public tax supported health care system. The debate over private vs. public health care systems has been a long one that has been going for years now. Because most of the world already has publicly funded healthcare systems, this makes the United States the control subject of an experiment comparing the merits of private verse public healthcare. The results have not been favorable for those who live in the U.S. The United States currently has the most expensive health care system in the world. Even worse with all the technology that the United States has, compared to Canada, our infant mortality rate is higher and our average life expectancy is lower (Dressel 1). For every 1000 live births in Canada there are 4.69 deaths. The United States has 6.43 deaths (CIA World Factbook). Canada ranks 12th in life expectancy with an average age of 80.22. The United States is 48th with an average age of 77.85 (CIA World Factbook 2). According to author Terry Boychuk the rest of the industrialized world figured out “private insurance would never be able to cover all necessary hospital procedures and services; and that even minimal protection is beyond the reach of the poor, the working poor, and those with the most serious health problems” (Dressel 1). Over half of the bankruptcies filed every year in the United States are directly related to medical expenses. Of those who filed 75% had health insurance.
