Career Aspirations

My undergraduate experience at Emory & Henry College has fostered a sense of personal responsibility within me. I feel that it is my duty to help future generations in their natural, everyday environment, the school. I have decided to pursue a career that incorporates psychology and children by choosing to become an elementary school guidance counselor. I feel that William & Mary is an institution that will help me to achieve my career aspirations.
My desire to work with children in a school setting led me to an internship where I assisted a local elementary school guidance counselor. My experience as an intern was invaluable. At first, I had planned on a career in clinical psychology, but during my experience, I realized that my talents were better suited for school counseling. While there, I was able to sit in on individual counseling sessions, teach guidance lessons within the classroom, as well as design and lead an Anger Management Program. Through this experience, I learned how to communicate with children, and how to listen to them so that their interests and well-being are encouraged. I realized that children are diverse with interests and concerns that require special attention. One aspect of my internship that I enjoyed the most was the constant conversation with my supervisor. He was supportive and allowed each endeavor to be collaborative. I hope to establish a similar environment in my guidance office.
In addition, my coursework has strengthened my desire to work with children. In Psychology of Learning, I learned how the brain functions and how individuals respond to different activities in a way that will maximize their learning potential. Courses such as Personality Theories and Abnormal Psychology helped me to understand disabilities and the treatment of disordered behavior.
