Part I:
"High cohesiveness in a group leads to higher group Productivity." Do you agree or disagree? Explain and use research to support your position. Be sure to cite and reference any outside sources.
In order to answer this discussion question I will first define what high cohesiveness is. I will then examine what features groups have that can affect cohesiveness and then look at what evidence there is to support my belief that high cohesiveness in a group does indeed lead to higher group productivity.
High Cohesiveness
Cohesion is “the act or state of sticking together tightly” (Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, 2008) Cohesiveness is the displaying of the attribute of cohesion. I understand high cohesiveness within a group to be the individual members successfully working together and the development of a positive relationship between the individual members of the group. I would associate high cohesiveness with good teamwork. Vecchio (2006, p225) defines cohesiveness as “the extent to which members are attracted to the group and the desire to stay with it”.
Groups
Groups can be classified as Formal and Informal (Vecchio R, P 2006 p212-213). A formal group is a group that is task orientated and to which employees are assigned. An informal group is a voluntary group whose members have chosen to join the group.
Group can also be open or closed (Vecchio R, P p213). An Open group would have a constantly changing membership whilst a closed group’s membership would be more stable.
People join groups for many reasons; security, protection, for affiliation, esteem, emotional support and a sense of identity. They also join to accomplish tasks.
In order for group members to be attracted to one another it is ideal for members to work in close proximity to one another. Vecchio (2006 p215) explains “people who are physically closer to one another develop closer relationships than those who are...
