Steinbeck has conveyed the themes of loneliness and isolation in “Of Mice and Men”, through its characters, settings and the situations that the characters find themselves in.
Steinbeck conveys the themes of loneliness and Isolation through his characters by outlining and expressing the sad and lonely lives they lead. One very lonely character in this play is seen to be Crooks. Crooks is an African American doomed to spend the rest of his life in oppression. Crooks dream is just to being recognized as a human being and as a normal person who has a place of his own. Although this place of his own is situated at the back of the ranch beside the dung heap he is very content with his way of living and is very educated due to his love for reading. Crooks just wants to live in a world of bliss and have the freedom to follow his dreams and desires. Crooks is not only seen as a minority and isolated because of his colour but also out-looked upon as not being a full individual due to his disability of his crooked back, from that time he gained his name “Crooks”. Crooks has supported this view when he quotes, “Such paradises of freedom contentment and safety are not found in this world”.
Another very lonely character in this play is Curley’s Wife. Curley’s wife is lonely because she was the only woman on the ranch. She is not only lonely but she is also very sad. Her reason for her sadness is she hates Curley, the guy whom she is married to. She hates Curly because of his jealousy and that she is now not allowed to talk to any of the workers on the ranch because he has said so. She had no one to talk to because she has caused a lot of trouble in the past. Not a soul mourned her when she passed away. People thought she was no good living as Curley says to her, “You god damn tramp”, very rude and abrupt showing no respect. People didn’t like her and she was very sad and lonely.
