I have never been as self-driven as I am today. This had to do with my grandfather’s passing away. He was my mentor, my inspiration. His passing made me realize the importance of making every day and everything I do worthwhile. Ever since I was seven, I had lived with my grandparents in Singapore. Just like any typical kids, I used to resent my grandfather for yelling at me and being vulgar. Although grandpa was grumpy some of the time, he was a very caring person; he donated to charities regularly and helped his family members when they were in need. Our family has run a successful importing business for generations. One night, my grandfather shared with me about how he was losing his competency in the marketplace due to his limited education. Wits and skills are no longer enough in this IT-savvy era; knowledge and wisdom are also vital in order to be competent in business. Through business education at the University of Washington, I hope to gain experiences that will help me contribute more to society and achieve my career goals.
Currently, I am working in the Student Administration Council at North Seattle Community College as a Communication Officer. This job is very competitive. In order to get this position, everyone needs to go through tedious and challenging processes. They also need to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.2. I love challenges so I chose to apply for this job. Through this career, I am able to experience how it feels to work in an office environment. I have also learned to be responsible in what I do, gain leadership skills and ultimately, time management. Time management is the most important skill that I have learned working in the Student Administration Council. I have learned not to procrastinate or rush to complete everything at the last minute; learning to manage time better can maximize efficiency and help me make better decisions.
