In his editorial, “The Other Gender Gap” Marshall Poe expresses his concern for boys today who are not academically performing as well as once perceived by the public. Explaining that less men than women attend college today because of the push of reformers to create equality has actually created inequality. Poe explains that girls have been outperforming boys in several academic aspects in grades K-12. Poe narrates that in both primary and secondary schooling, girls have been receiving higher marks or overall grades than boys. Also, that when tested the girls continuously score higher than the boys. Poe asserts that boys still underperform despite all the economic advantages for them to achieve in academics. Poe informs readers that the economic payoff for higher education has never been greater. Yet on the other hand, males earn more money than females without a diploma in everyday jobs. This idea means that boys get instant monetary gratification by going to a job versus working towards a degree to earn money. Since males and females are so different, society has taken steps to figure out exactly where the problem lies, yet the United States still lags behind. In conclusion Poe opposed the idea that since they have made boys and girls equal in school, less problems are created and higher averages of people would attend college. Yet, actually all it has done is created more issues that need to be addressed and created a wider academic gap between males and females. By trying to create uniformity among genders, it has actually made circumstances quite disproportionate.
