Abstract
This paper will show the current computer networks for Kudler Fine Foods and describe its pitfalls and disadvantages. We will further recommend changes based on state-of-the-art technology available and in use in many other stores in your same industry. By following these recommendations, Kudler should achieve better network reliability with less downtime. The system response time will greatly improve and with the advanced security methods, Kudler Foods’ valued data will be protected from intruders.
Overview of Existing Kudler Fine Foods Network
Kudler Fine Foods’ existing network consists of three locations; La Jolla, Del Mar and Encinitas. The La Jolla and Del Mar locations have an identical setup consisting of a Modem, four Point of Sales (POS) Terminals, a Novell server for the POS terminals, an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) for power protection, a Windows computer with a printer and external CD burner and a single WindowsNT Server. The Encinitas location consists of a Modem, four POS terminals a Novell server and a UPS.
Existing Network Reliability and Uptime
The network reliability and uptime for each of the Kudler Fine Foods locations is adequate. Each location has only a few pieces of equipment and a UPS. “An Uninterruptible Power Supply is a device that sits between a power supply (e.g. a wall outlet) and a device (e.g. a computer) to prevent undesired features of the power source (outages, sags, surges, bad harmonics, etc.) from the supply from adversely affecting the performance of the device.” (Christenson, 2005) The use of the UPS in this system effectively gives 100 percent uptime.
Existing Network Topology and Response Time
