During the last ten years, the electric power industry has undergone tumultuous changes. Starting with the deregulation of the industry in 1996 to the rising clamor for renewable and clean energy, the electric power sector has come across unforeseen challenges. The aftermath of the deregulation was anything but sweet; in 2000, the California power market saw dramatic price increases, from $30/MWHr to $300/MWHr and even higher. Subsequent caps to reduce the spiking power price slowed the deregulation. Meanwhile, the Energy Policy Act of 2005 gave a new direction to the electric power industry. The limitation of greenhouse gas emissions directly impacted the power industry; indeed, 21 states have mandated substantial increases in the use of renewable energy, such as wind and solar power. Moreover, the government has promoted civil nuclear energy, which drew flak following the Three Mile Island Accident of 1979 and Chernobyl disaster of 1986. Such examples highlight the drastic changes that have been sweeping across the electric power world.

As the socio-economic edifice of any nation depends on the foundation of the utility industry, the need exists for vision, leadership, and proper understanding to steward the industry to the next level, sustaining the prosperity and growth of the world’s developed and developing economies. I am confident that I have the background, experience and knowledge to provide meaningful input into the current situation facing the electric power industry.
