Like everyone who grew up in a developing country, the desire to improve the situation of things around me is always present in my mind. Persistent blackouts, contaminated water, impassable roads, poverty and illiteracy, are the major conditions people in my country experience every day. While the politicians and leaders choose to sit around and ignore these issues, most Nigerians also sit back and assume that they are powerless to change the situation around them. Even with that common behaviour around me, I have observed that most people who have the enthusiasm, and also aspire to change things are not only those who have been educated, but most importantly believe that their efforts to apply their knowledge will produce fruitful results.
I share the enthusiasms, aspirations and beliefs of these particular people, and know that advancing in my education by obtaining a college degree, will play a huge part in fully equipping me to serve my community. I am mostly concerned about the problems that involve construction and infrastructure. Therefore I have chosen to pursue a career in mechanical engineering. Attaining a college education will give me the necessary knowledge, help me become more creative, and teach me to take on problems without feelings of pressure or fear. In the future, I hope to work for a construction firm by helping them design, enhance and maintain their equipment; helping them to reduce costs, and also improve the overall performance of their work at the same time.
Being useful to a community doesn’t involve only the academic aspect of education; it also involves both the social and moral aspects. Learning to connect with people of different cultural backgrounds is important. The college experience will expose me to so many diverse cultures, and provide me with an important lesson in co-operation and tolerance.
