Today soldiers are paid better pay and allowances when compared to the public sector. Their living conditions, medical services and facilities have also improved considerably in spite of the increasing numbers. Medical facilities provided for the immediate family including pre-natal , even maternity and old age . The seriously wounded in action have a modern well equipped Military Hospital in Ragama planned to provide Rehabilitation and after care services and provision for pensioners including officers to find accommodation to live in dignity . However, the soldier has to meet numerous demands and social obligations which require financial resources that have to be met when they are needed as planning for it is sometimes not possible when serving in operational areas. . But urgent financial needs require urgent solutions which is not readily available form the public or private sector institutions . At the inception of the army soldiers had a permanent station from where they were deployed for a known period of duty which enabled them to base their families and provide education for their children . The Army has to provide a soldier with three or for beds – one in the home station, perhaps two in the operational area and one in hospital . This former situation changed after commencement of hostilities since mid 1980’s and has not improved since. A soldier certainly has a permanent regimental ‘home’ base but they are deployed to answer the cal of duty which may mean sometimes years in the operational areas of the North and East. The result of all this deployment is that seldom is the opportunity to indulge in any other work to raise finances or enhance their pay and allowances to meet the rising cost of living.
