Children and Obesity
In today’s society, obesity is a big factor. Now in day’s children as young as five year olds are obese and risk having health problems in their young lives. Individuals believe that the cause of young obese children is televisions, video games, and junk food. Obesity needs to be better educated to young children to live a better life style. Several factors prove that obesity is on the rise.
In a study done in Mexico, children from five elementary schools were randomly placed into four different groups. The groups had similar ages, heights, BMI percentiles, and same genders. The experiment was over four different Kellogg cereals corn flakes, pre-sweetened corn based; chocolate pre-sweetened corn based, and pre-sweetened rice based. Group 1 consumed one serving of 33 or grams of RTEC. Group 2 consumed 2 servings of 33 or 7 grams of RTEC, one at breakfast and another serving at dinner. Group 3 consumed one serving of 33 or 7 grams or RTEC. In addition, the parents and the child received nutritional guide. Group four were involved, but there was no treatment. Overall, the experiment was for 12 weeks. Perez-Lizaur and Marvan conclude that the families were giving nutrition education programs for the 12 weeks. In addition, only one child that had an extreme weight final value was excluded from analysis. The two RTEC groups and the control group, only the group that had RTEC nutrition education had no increment in the body weight. In addition, an unadjusted weight change of 2.03kg compared with children in the group. Moreover, the BMI reduced significantly only in the group of children that received RTEC and nutrition education. Boys reduced total body fat by 1.3% more than girls did by 0.05. In addition, boys increased their intense physical activity while girls decreased it resulting in significant difference between boys and girls 8.8 to 60.2 vs. 12.6 to 85.7.
