Crime Rate in Malaysia
Crime has been on the increase in Malaysia. This can be verified by the rise in the index crime statistics that conducted by the government.
The increase of crime is due to population increase, unemployment, issue of ‘lepak’, influx of illegal immigrants etc that are often attributed for its rise are discussed. Crimes in Malaysia are divided into two categories which are violent crime and property crime. Violent crime which generally includes crimes of violence that is sufficiently regular and significant in occurrence. For example, murder, attempted murder, gang robbery, rape and lastly voluntarily causing hurt. Where as property crime includes those offences involving the loss of property during which there is no use of violence by the perpetrators. There are housebreaking, theft of vehicles, and other forms of theft.
Crimes in Malaysia related to property account for about 90 % of all crimes reported every year. Violent crimes, although attracting the greatest attention of the public and the media, contributes to only 10 % of all crimes reported.
On the other hand, property crime has shown a rather volatile growth pattern and it can be seen to be the main contributor of the total index crime in our country. It is also very closely linked to the total index crime situation in the country. Similarly the total index crime in Malaysia shows an increase in crime in the last 20 years.
Crime in Malaysia as in other developing countries has blossomed from its humble beginnings of simple theft, wayside robbery to violent crimes such as murder and rape. Therefore, polices have to work to cope this problems before it is too late. Not to forget, we also have to be more alert on our safety.
