Dr. Fox-Good Oral Presentations (1/2 Essay Grade)
Winter, 2009

The topic of your presentation is the book you’ve read for the Outside Reading assignment. Mostly, you will talk to the class about the same topics/ideas you have addressed (or will address) in your three-page paper. You may stand or sit at your seat (or use the lectern, if you prefer) to present; the presentation is to be relatively informal, but please use relatively formal diction/register when you’re speaking to the class.

BASICS:
1. SCHEDULE. You will sign up for a day and time (class or flex) ahead of time—and you’re committed to this time. If you come to class on that day, you must present (or you will re-ceive a 0), so make sure you’re ready, with book in hand, notes and/or outline, and any hand-outs you want the class to have. If you must be absent because of illness or emergency—the absence must be officially excused--you will be permitted to make up your presentation when you come back to class, if time permits. If we do not have sufficient time in class, you will have to arrange with me to make up the presentation at a time convenient for both of us.

2. TIME. You must speak to the class for AT LEAST five minutes, but for NO MORE than six minutes. (Your grade will suffer if you are under five, and I will stop you at six, whether you are done or not.) So: practice your remarks, and time yourself before the day you present.

3. NOTES. You must speak from notes and/or an outline. Please make sure you have two copies with you on the day you come to class. If you do not hand me your notes/outline before you start your talk, you will lose 10 points right off the top.
